Surefire Lass had her first start at Wangaratta today and you could have been forgiven for thinking that the ‘stars’ were in alignment when she drew barrier 13, had saddle cloth number 13 and her race was at 13.13pm. However it was not to be and she ran a very credible 5th placing from the unsuitable barrier and a ‘shifty’ track surface.
The early pace in the race just ran her off her feet and she was near the rear of the field for most of the 1,000m 3YO Maiden. However once she was in the straight and balanced up she produced a blistering run which saw her make up at least 6 lengths.
Jockey Billy Egan was full of praise for her saying she was the perfect professional. It looks like she wants more ground so her next start will be over 1,300m to 1,400m.
